The world’s largest online illegal marketplace today was taken offline and an Australian man accused of running it has been arrested. The primary operator behind DarkMarket, a website that prosecutors have described as “probably the largest illegal marketplace on the Darknet”, has been arrested in Germany. DarkMarket launched in June 2019 and increased in prominence throughout 2020, especially after the exit scam of the former number one marketplace Empire in August 2020.
These factors are not examined in recent studies on dark trading that use data sources at the market center-level (e.g., Degryse et al., 2014, Comerton-Forde and Putnins, 2015). We study more than two and one-half million dark/lit marketable order execution decisions, and more than six million trading decisions overall. The results are based on more than three thousand equity traders who are geographically dispersed throughout the U.S.

One of the most well-known dark markets was Silk Road, launched in 2011 by Ross Ulbricht, operating under the pseudonym “Dread Pirate Roberts.” Silk Road gained notoriety for its role in facilitating the sale of drugs, with estimates suggesting it accounted for around 70% of all drug sales on the dark web. In 2013, the FBI shut down Silk Road and arrested Ulbricht, but the concept of dark markets continued to evolve.
The Rise of Cryptocurrencies

One of the most well-known technologies enabling darknets is the Tor network, which was developed by the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory in the mid-1990s and later released to the public. Tor, short for “The Onion Router,” routes internet traffic through a global network of volunteer-operated servers to anonymize a user’s online activity.
The use of cryptocurrencies has enabled dark markets to flourish, creating a seemingly unstoppable digital economy operating outside the boundaries of mainstream society. As a result, law enforcement agencies worldwide face significant challenges in combating these hidden marketplaces.
A bigger threat to cybercrooks may come not from law enforcement agencies but from other criminals. For a long time DarkMarket was subject to hacking attacks from Iceman, aka Max Ray Vision (né Butler), the mastermind behind a rival website called CardersMarket, until his arrest in September 2007. Vision used to be a patriot, seeking out and patching up holes in the Pentagon’s cyber defences. The trouble was, he didn’t see the need to tell the Defense Department what he was doing, and in 1998 he was arrested on suspicion of infecting them with a virus.
